This article discusses the recent encyclical started by Benedict XVI, completed and published by Francis, considering in particular the argumentative strategy. In 1998, the “Fides et ratio” of John Paul II challenged contemporary philosophy asking it to abandon a weak inspiration and to have greater metaphysical courage to allow a comparison between visions of the world. Today the “Lumen fidei”, on the contrary, seems to propose a weak theology that has lost the neo-Scholastic confidence in the capacity of reason to clarify the contents of the Christian faith. The main topic is that of “it would be better”, and it’s impossible not to agree that the world would be better if it were as described by faith, but that doesn’t seem sufficient to maintain that things are just so.

Abstract
This article discusses the recent encyclical started by Benedict XVI, completed and published by Francis, considering in particular the argumentative strategy. In 1998, the “Fides et ratio” of John Paul II challenged contemporary philosophy asking it to abandon a weak inspiration and to have greater metaphysical courage to allow a comparison between visions of the world. Today the “Lumen fidei”, on the contrary, seems to propose a weak theology that has lost the neo-Scholastic confidence in the capacity of reason to clarify the contents of the Christian faith. The main topic is that of “it would be better”, and it’s impossible not to agree that the world would be better if it were as described by faith, but that doesn’t seem sufficient to maintain that things are just so.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
