This essay surveys the contemporary debate concerning how the so-called ‘genetic revolution’ affects three relevant issues for political philosophy. The first issue comes from the collapse of the traditional distinction between natural and social goods and raises the question if distributive justice requires to correct natural disadvantages by direct genetic interventions. The second flows from the power to modify the genetic endowment of future people and wonders whether we have any liberty to do it. The third arises from the possibility to make economic exploitation of genetic information and puzzles whether it could be privately appropriated or not.

Abstract

This essay surveys the contemporary debate concerning how the so-called ‘genetic revolution’ affects three relevant issues for political philosophy. The first issue comes from the collapse of the traditional distinction between natural and social goods and raises the question if distributive justice requires to correct natural disadvantages by direct genetic interventions. The second flows from the power to modify the genetic endowment of future people and wonders whether we have any liberty to do it. The third arises from the possibility to make economic exploitation of genetic information and puzzles whether it could be privately appropriated or not.
