With a specific focus on educational implications, this article describes the report as a textual, discursive and linguistic type and provides useful guidance useful for writing correct, appropriate and effective reports. In the well-defined area of “writablility”, the text outlines a possible way to improve teaching writing skills to secondary school students. The first part of the paper outlines the general characteristics of the report as a class of text and identifies the distinctive features of its form that are particularly useful and practicable in schools: memorandums, reports and research reports, short essays and reviews. The second part focuses on the cognitive and operational processes that makes it possible to write functional reports, identifying a possible distinct compositional stages: the reading of the source texts and their manipulation; writing the draft; and revision.
