This essay analyzes the structure of the Italian tourism industry – from the point of view of the employment and of the ability to produce wealth – as it has evolved from the immediate postwar period to the present, comparing, after being homogenized, the data supplied by the Censuses of industry and services (1951-2011). In particular, however, it analyzes this trend in relation to structural economic stages of development or decline.

Abstract
