Stenurus globicephalae (Nematoda: Pseudalidae) and Crassicauda grampicola (Nematoda: Spirurida) were found in the pterygoid sinuses of two Risso’s dolphins, Grampus griseus (G. Cuvier, 1812), stranded on the coast of Tuscany in 2012. The gross lesions of two animals showed catarrhal sinusitis of paranasal sinuses, thickening and hyperaemia of meninges. These lesions were linked to the presence of these parasites. S. globicephalae has been already reported in Risso’s dolphin intestine as accidental event. The present report confirms the presence of this parasite in the pterygoid sinuses of this marine mammal. Pterygoid parasitism can be an important factor in natural mortality because of proximity of the ear and the brain. The presence of these two parasites could have contributed to the stranding of the two Risso’s dolphins.
