The chapter discusses the introduction, development, and consolidation of agency work in Italy, a process that began belatedly and in an extremely hostile context. The case enables reflection on the conditions in which a long-opposed institutional innovation may come about, on the characteristics that the subsequent process of institutionalization tends to assume, and on the prospects that open up - somewhat unexpectedly - for a socially sustainable regulation of flexible work.
