Within 1895 and 1905 Thomas Mann went frequently to Italy, staying there for long periods. Within 1897 and 1927 he introduced and camouflaged in its narrative work many suggestions coming from italian “veristi” (G. Verga), “simbolisti” (G. D’Annunzio) and from criticism and aesthetics worked out by Italians (Croce). In this short paper we will simply proof that the story of Tristan (1903) is a parody of the story Le vergini delle rocce by Gabriele D’Annunzio. All the prominent characters and situations which are represented in Tristan are an outcome of this satirical intention and derision. Our research focuses among other things on the analysis of the surnames and of the christian names used in the tales Tristan and Mario und der Zauberer.
