As such it can not be designed or protected only. Constrain scenarios for the traditional unsustainable agriculture contemporary and future means to oust the sector production from its ability to generate new cultural value. Understand in which direction to go requires to expand analysis for all purposes, tangible and intangible, that make agriculture able to generate the sense of the place. On this theme is focused the research on the “rural vernacular heritage” that University of Milan launched in partnership with UNESCO World Heritage Centre. The meaning "rural" expands the concept of “vernacular” to all relations, environmental and human and economic, generated by the combination of agriculture with each site. The goal is to define the needs of sustainable rural development that determine and may still influence the new rural landscapes into context of strong international competitiveness
