La valle dei Valdesi : i processi contro Tommaso Guiot, sarto di Pragelato :(Oulx, 1495)

Tommaso Guiot was the tailor of Pragelato, a small village in the Chisone Valley in the western Alps. For the religious history of the late Middle Ages this was a special place, a real ‘Valley of the Waldensians’. In 1488 a devastating crusade was directed against them. Inevitably Tommaso was involved. Like many others, he was prosecuted, both before and also shortly after the military attack. But the records of proceedings against him are the only ones that are extant. Why and how did they survive? To answer this, we need to look at other judicial records, now held in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris (which also contain the proceedings against Tommaso), and to investigate the cultural climates which led to this documentary survival. While the long and persistent repression led by the Friars Minor is the broader context for these prosecutions, the records themselves cast new light on many things - on members of Guiot’s own family, on the community of Pragelato and, above all, on the Waldensians. The human and judicial experience of one individual, Tommaso, leads us on a via dolorosa, towards the tragic and sorrow-laden experiences of many: on the foundations of one person’s experience, a collective drama takes shape and becomes visible.

Tommaso Guiot era il sarto di Pragelato, un piccolo villaggio della valle del Chisone nelle Alpi occidentali, un luogo davvero speciale per la storia religiosa del tardo medioevo: una vera e propria ‘valle dei Valdesi’. Nel 1488 contro di loro viene bandita una devastante crociata. In modo inevitabile Tommaso si ritrova coinvolto e processato – sia prima sia dopo l’attacco militare – insieme a molti altri, ma il suo procedimento giudiziario è l’unico sopravvissuto. Rispondere a domande relative alle ragioni e alle modalità di tale sopravvivenza significa volgere lo sguardo verso altri atti giudiziari – attualmente in volumi allogati presso la Bibliothèque Nationale di Parigi – contenenti anche quello contro Tommaso e verso il clima culturale che ha permesso tale salvataggio documentario. In un contesto di repressione perdurante condotta dai frati Minori, i processi contro il sarto gettano nuova luce sui membri della famiglia Guiot, sulla comunità di Pragelato e soprattutto sui Valdesi. La vicenda umana e giudiziaria di Tommaso permette di conoscere vicende dolorose che attraverso l’esperienza individuale si fanno dramma collettivo. M-M
