This paper presents the state-of-the-art of an Artificial Intelligence-oriented platform designed to promote English learning through an “augmented” real-life daily practice. The key concept is that all the components of the system converge into the creation of an augmented dimension, offering users opportunities to interact with a real environment through artificial agents such as chat-bots, intelligent labels and virtual characters. This approach is realized by all the components of the system: the website, the social network and the mobile app. AL (Augmented Learning) integrates an Artificial Intelligence-based system that allows the creation of an interactive portable environment, with ubiquitous accessibility, generating a continuous and modular learning experience, using innovative cognitive approaches and mobile technologies. The platform was inspired by from preliminary EEG-based studies we conducted on cognitive aspects of learning English, such as motivational levers or priming visual and auditory stimuli to enhance attention and long lasting memory. The motivational factor is realized by promoting the use of English for mobility purposes (travel, job, cultural exchange, etc.). The content is structured in a modular way and through guided paths, and it is customized according to the users’ characteristics. Besides the “more traditional” website, the project provides an “app” that can also be accessed from smart-phones and tablets, so that especially young people, through a playful and easy to understand environment, can enhance their awareness of the importance of language knowledge in a mobility perspective. The project, currently at an early development stage, also represents an opportunity to experiment new dissemination modalities and innovative cognitive approaches to learning, through interdisciplinary collaboration. The complexity and the importance of the topic require contributions from disciplines such as Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Psycho-pedagogy and Artificial Intelligence. The project also enables the observation of users’ behaviours while accessing the applications, allowing researchers to work out new learning customized strategies and new communication models
