The authors consider the Kolmogorov-Avrami model of crystallization. Since at time t the space occupied by the crystallized spherulites is a Boolean model, methods of random set theory can be used to estimate nucleation and growth rates. The paper presents methods which use empirical capacities and spherical contact distributions. Properties of the estimators are investigated both mathematically and by simulation. It is obvious that for the estimation of the nucleation rate further work is necessary since sometimes negative estimates appear.

Abstract

The authors consider the Kolmogorov-Avrami model of crystallization. Since at time t the space occupied by the crystallized spherulites is a Boolean model, methods of random set theory can be used to estimate nucleation and growth rates. The paper presents methods which use empirical capacities and spherical contact distributions. Properties of the estimators are investigated both mathematically and by simulation. It is obvious that for the estimation of the nucleation rate further work is necessary since sometimes negative estimates appear.
