Arthrogryposis is a disease characterized by a congenital limb contracture. It affects a considerable number of newborns in Piedmontese breed. The higher frequency in males, the evidence of a similar bovine (Brown Swiss breed) and human genetic pathology (SMA1 heritable syndrome), justify a study on this disorder by genetic approach. In the present paper a part of a wider work on arthrogryposis in Piedmontese cattle has been presented. Particularly a population and a molecular studies have been done, analysing a database and using a candidate gene approach, considering the SMN gene correlated to the disorder.
