On the basis of personal observation of 38 cases of mediastinal dysembryoma seen over an 11 year period, the main statistical and anatomopathological problems of these neoplasias are examined. The symptomatological picture created by these tumors depends on the pressure exerted on nearby organs, but very often their discovery is due to a chance X-ray. However, only surgery and subsequent histology can provide an exact diagnosis; surgery is curative only in benign cases. The prognosis for malignant cases, on the other hand, is disappointing since after operation they are insensitive to further treatment.

Abstract

On the basis of personal observation of 38 cases of mediastinal dysembryoma seen over an 11 year period, the main statistical and anatomopathological problems of these neoplasias are examined. The symptomatological picture created by these tumors depends on the pressure exerted on nearby organs, but very often their discovery is due to a chance X-ray. However, only surgery and subsequent histology can provide an exact diagnosis; surgery is curative only in benign cases. The prognosis for malignant cases, on the other hand, is disappointing since after operation they are insensitive to further treatment.
