Abstract
In the Historia Apollonii regis Tyri, latin novel of the late antiquity taking place on the eastern coasts of the Mediterranean Sea, riddles play a central role, disguising the identity or the story of the characters and at the same time revealing them. The various translations of the text into romance languages throughout the Midde Ages show us different ways to adapt ancient riddles to the new public, sometimes making them easier to understand, sometimes increasing their obscurity. Besides the riddles, however, it’s possible to point out in the story many other shapes of enigmatic communication, often grasped and cleverly reworked by medieval translators.Pubblicazioni consigliate
