A multi-center European study identified occupational groups exposed to low or very low benzene levels. We report the main findings of the mortality study among bus drivers and traffic police officers in Genoa and Milan, Italy. The study included all male workers employed in the period from 1949-79. The follow-up study covered the period 1960-1998. Elevated risks of lung cancer and Hodgkin's disease were found among bus drivers. Mortality from Hodgkin's disease was also found to have increased among traffic police officers in Milan. The increased risk of lung cancer among bus drivers was positively associated with the length of employment and latency. Airborne pollutants might be a plausible explanation for these findings.
