The selective oxidation of propylene has been performed at 180°C, 9atm of propylene and 31 atm of air, in a batch reactor with and without solid cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc). The total conversion of propylene is independent of the presence of CoPc, while increasing amounts of CoPc increase the selectivity for propylene oxide up to about 35 mol-%. These results suggest onset of the oxidation process in the gas phase and/or on the walls of the reactor. The reaction seems to follow a mechanism similar to the one proposed by Daniel and Keulks [J. Catal. 24 (1972) 529],.
