The polymer-bound nicotinic acid (P61) designed as a long-acting form of this well known hypolipidemic drug is devoid of the undesirable side effects which are due to the very high peak level of free nicotinic acid (NA). The effect of this compound has been pharmacologically evaluated both in the plasma lipids and in the liver lipid accumulation in hypercholesterolemic rats. This polymer seems to maintain the activity of the free form of NA on plasma lipids whereas it shows a protective action on TG content in the liver.

Abstract

The polymer-bound nicotinic acid (P61) designed as a long-acting form of this well known hypolipidemic drug is devoid of the undesirable side effects which are due to the very high peak level of free nicotinic acid (NA). The effect of this compound has been pharmacologically evaluated both in the plasma lipids and in the liver lipid accumulation in hypercholesterolemic rats. This polymer seems to maintain the activity of the free form of NA on plasma lipids whereas it shows a protective action on TG content in the liver.
