Abstract

The preparation and 195Pt, 119Sn, and 31P NMR spectroscopy of the complexes PtCln(SnCl3)2-n(P(OR)3)2 (n = 0, 1; R = Et, i-Pr, Ph), [Pt(SnCl3)3(P(OR)3)2]- (R = Me, Et, Ph), [PtCl2(SnCl3)L]- (L = PEt3, PTol3, P(OEt)3, P(OPh)3, AsEt3, AsPh3), [PtCl(SnCl3)2L]- (L = PEt3, PTol3, AsEt3, AsPh3), [Pt(SnCl3)3(AsEt3)]-, and [Pt(SnCl3)4(PEt3)]2- are reported. These studies support the relative stability of poly(trichlorostannate) complexes of Pt(II). The structure of the complex Pt(SnCl3)2(P(OPh)3)2 has been determined by X-ray analysis and shown to have trans-SnCl3- ligands and an overall square-planar arrangement. The possible involvement of poly(trichlorostannate) complexes in catalytic homogeneous hydrogenation is discussed. Crystal data: a= 11.177 (1), b = 13.181 (2), c = 14.489(3) Å; β= 98.52 (1)°; V = 2111.0 Å3; space group P21/n; Z = 2.
