Un test per la vita: l’empatia in Blade Runner

A test for life: empathy in Blade Runner The paper focuses on the role played by the concept of "empathy" in Philip K. Dick's novel Do androids dream of electric sheep? (1968), and in the movie shot after it by Ridley Scott, Blade Runner (1982; Director's cut 1992; The final cut 2007). The Voigt-Kampff test employed by the android hunters to distinguish human from the terrible Nexus-6 is exactly a test about the empathic abilities of the subject, measured on the physiological variations provoked by a series of questions aiming at evoking strong emotional responses. Is such a test really able to distinguish human and post-human? While trying to answer this question, my paper will compare the different visions of the cyborg in Dick and Scott, and will consider the philosophical implications of an empathic theory of emotions and their intersubjective sharing.

Il contributo affronta il ruolo giocato dal concetto di "empatia" nel romanzo di Philip K. Dick Do androids dream of electric sheep? (1968), e nel film che Ridley Scott ne ha tratto, Blade Runner (1982; Director's cut 1992; The final cut 2007). Il test Voigt-Kampff, utilizzato dai cacciatori di androidi per distinguere gli umani dai temibili Nexus-6, è appunto una prova delle capacità empatiche del soggetto, misurate sulla base delle variazioni fisiologiche provocate da una batteria di domande mirate a suscitare forti reazioni emotive. Ma davvero questo test è in grado di distinguere l'umano dal post-umano? Nel cercare di rispondere a questa domanda, il contributo metterà a confronto la differente visione del cyborg propria di Dick e di Scott, e al contempo affronterà le implicazioni filosofiche di una teoria empatica delle emozioni e della loro condivisione intersoggettiva.
