Diphenyldiazomethane reacts in good yields with the unsaturated hydrido-carbonyl compound [Re2(μ-H)2(CO)8] (1) to give insertion into an Re-H-Re bridge; the derivative, [Re2(μ-H)(CO)8(μ-η1-N(H)NCPh2)] (2), has been characterised by a single crystal X-ray analysis. On the contrary, the reaction of ethyldiazoacetate with 1 occurs with loss of N2 to give [Re2(μ-H)(CO)8(μ-η2-CH2CO2Et)](3).
