The features of γ-FeOOH layers deposited by the anodic oxidation of ferrous ions are investigated by a non-steady-state diffusion technique. The oxide is found to present the behaviour of a homogeneous layer up to a thickness of ≈600 Å; thereafter modifications possibly involving structural rearrangements of the layer are detected. The activation energy of the diffusion process is determined. Results are considered to be relevant to the understanding of the complex behaviour of protective oxide layers on iron alloys. © 1983.

Abstract

The features of γ-FeOOH layers deposited by the anodic oxidation of ferrous ions are investigated by a non-steady-state diffusion technique. The oxide is found to present the behaviour of a homogeneous layer up to a thickness of ≈600 Å; thereafter modifications possibly involving structural rearrangements of the layer are detected. The activation energy of the diffusion process is determined. Results are considered to be relevant to the understanding of the complex behaviour of protective oxide layers on iron alloys. © 1983.
