In 18 anaesthetised and mechanically ventilated pigs, we analysed the activity of NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) and of aminoguanidine respectively costitutive (cNOS) and inducible (iNOS) nitric oxide synthase inhibitors, in a model of septic shock induced by administration of E. Coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The evaluated parameters were: systemic (MAP) and pulmonary (MPAP) arterial pressure, cardiac output (CO), systemic (SVR) and pulmonary (PVR) vascular resistances and compliance (Crs) and resistance (Rrs) of the respiratory system. Results show that LPS increased the release of both cNOS and iNOS in the systemic vascular bed. cNOS exerted also a modulator activity in pulmonary vascular bed and reduced LPS bronchoconstrictor effect.
