The interfacial electrostatic behaviour of nickel and cobalt ferrites (MexFe3-xO4) is shown to be exclusively determined by the actual properties of the surface and not by the bulk composition. Acid treatments of the samples do not cause significant modifications either in the chemical or phase composition; surface modifications of the oxides are, instead, sensitively reflected in charge versus pH curves. © 1989.
