Building on Gilroy’s notion of post-imperial melancholia, this essay charts the fictional and ideological ground of Chris Cleave’s best-selling novel, The Other Hand (2008), through the lens of the current debate pitching hegemonic and increasingly defensive contractual views of citizenship against more cosmopolitan understandings of the vexed issues of immigration and asylum. The novel brings to the fore Cleave’s underlying discourse of British/Western ‘imperial’ accountability for the affluent/poor divide characterising the current state of the neo-liberal world. Its redemptive sentimental narrative points to the active role of arts and the imagination in promoting a more progressive interplay between the defensive aetiology of national in-grouping and the ethical demands of hospitality.
