The article aims to give an account of the new perspectives for the history of Italian secondary school as they were raised at a recent congress, held at the University of Milan on 5th and 6th October 2011. The communications highlight the different approaches existing with regard to schoolbooks and underline how an analysis of this kind of source emerges as a primary step for historical research in education.
