Seventeenth century baroque texts written in Ukraine are part of a world and mentality where ambiguity was not only practiced, but theoretically discussed and sometimes justified. Panegyrics and sermons written at the court of or connected to Ivan Mazepa are intriguing examples of texts which may often be interpreted in more than one sense. Works of Stefan Javors'kyj and Pylyp Orlyk are exanined.
