Oedema can cause morbidity and mortality in piglets and is a source of economic loss in the pig industry world-wide. Plant based oral vaccines offer a new approach to vaccination strategies especially in the prevention of infection by enteric pathogens. Transgenic plant seeds are extremely well suited for the targeted synthesis of heterologous proteins and offer many advantages over conventional expression systems for the production of recombinant subunit vaccines.

Abstract

Oedema can cause morbidity and mortality in piglets and is a source of economic loss in the pig industry world-wide. Plant based oral vaccines offer a new approach to vaccination strategies especially in the prevention of infection by enteric pathogens. Transgenic plant seeds are extremely well suited for the targeted synthesis of heterologous proteins and offer many advantages over conventional expression systems for the production of recombinant subunit vaccines.
