The majority of GERD patients might be effectively treated with proton pump inhibitors. Only niche indications exist for surgery, even with the laparoscopic approach. There are no convincing indications, up to now, for the endoscopic therapeutic procedures (Stretta, endoscopic ligation, injection techniques), with the only exception of controlled clinical trials.
