The analysis of goat casein polymorphisms in goat species is quite complex, since a great number of mutations are known at each locus. We analysed three Lombardy goat breeds: Orobica, Verzasca and Frisa, at both phenotype and DNA level. Milk isoelectrofocusing provides a useful picture of the casein variation, which needs to be detailed by further DNA analyses to identify all the known genetic polymorphisms. Nevertheless, the protein analysis is of great help for a correct typing of each genotype. The paper discusses some analytical problems, and compares the casein structure of the three breeds, and of the cosmopolite Camosciata.

Abstract
