The paper is focused on a criminal trial held in late 4th century in Verona by an ecclesiastical court. It's a very significant case to discuss the adoption, by late imperial criminal courts, of an inquisitorial procedure and to analyze the conflict inside the Church between supporters of the old adversarial model and others inclining towards the "new" procedure adopted by secular authorities
