The contribution concerns the early medieval stone slabs of S. Maria in Gussago (Brescia, Lombardy). Today the slabs make up a pulpit, but they were probably originally part of a chancel enclosure. The two slabs are carved in very low relief with symbols and animals, showing a complex iconography symbolizing the Tree of Life and the struggle between Good and Evil. A new iconographic reading is proposed here.

Abstract
