The essay focuses on the results achieved in recent years by Italian and Swiss historiography in the study of the public and private care sector of Canton Ticino. Especially, it analyses the various provisions carried out by the Ticino public institutions, starting with the law of 1855, which represents the first Act of the cantonal legislator in the field of assistance, until to the other laws in the Twentieth Century, within the general attempt to build a modern welfare system in Ticino.
