Even back in the age of the Roman Empire, as we know from testimonies of historians, fights between opposite groups of supporters in sports competitions occurred frequently. This essay intends to demonstrate how the classical sources provide significant "precedents" of some sanctions and measures commonly applied today as a result of violent behaviours by sports supporters. In this first part of the essay, the author analyses the violent brawl that arose between opposing supporters in the amphitheatre of Pompeii in 59 A.D. on the occasion of gladiatorial games, and in particular the sanctions imposed as a consequence thereof, with specific focus on the fact that one of the sanctions consisted in an ancient type of "stadium ban".
