Nouns denoting persons may arise through a variety of formation processes (e.g. lexical ones: "Vater", "padre"; morphological ones: "Studentin", "studentessa"). In written language, they can be expressed through a series of variants (e. g. "Lehrer und Lehrerinnen"; "professori e professoresse"). German and Italian have different formation mechanisms and written forms (e.g. lack of internal capitalisation as an inclusive gender marker in Italian). These differences reflect contrasts in the paradigmatic dimension of grammatical gender (masculine, feminine and neuter in German; masculine and feminine in Italian). They are also reflexes of differences in the handling of the categories of grammatical, natural and social gender. It can therefore be assumed that "person" as concept is expressed differently in concrete usage in the two languages. The concrete linguistic realisation involves the grammatical, the semantic and the pragmatic dimension and is primarily connected with the concept of reference (reference to a single person: "Rektor", "rettore"; reference to several people: "Kommission", "commissione"). This article analyses nouns denoting persons in German and Italian texts from university websites. The predominantly quantitative analysis covers five categories (masculine, feminine, multiple forms, neutral forms and collective) in the singular, plural and singular+plural.

Abstract
The predominantly quantitative analysis covers five categories (masculine, feminine, multiple forms, neutral forms and collective) in the singular, plural and singular+plural.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
