Narrare e nominare : il valore dei nomi propri nella scrittura letteraria

The philosophy of language has shown that in the real world proper names are rigid designators, expressions which always denote the same referent. Even in the universe of possible worlds, proper names identify certain characters and sometimes they incontrovertibly associate particular and special features to fictional individuals. Within a narrative, the name identifies the character and builds the experience in the mind of the reader. A need bond links the identity of a character to his or her name, even when the reference may correspond to a vacuum, to an absence. On the one hand, characters are nonexistent objects; on the other, the value of the name, the rigidity of the reference and the criteria of identification are confronted with the reader’s counterfactual thinking, simulation, and empathy.

La filosofia del linguaggio ha mostrato come nel mondo reale i nomi propri siano designatori rigidi, cioè espressioni che denotano sempre lo stesso referente. Eb-bene, anche nell’universo dei mondi possibili, i nomi propri individuano personaggi determinati, e associano talvolta incontrovertibilmente particolari e specifiche carat-teristiche a individui finzionali. Il nome identifica, nella narrazione, il personaggio e costruisce l’esperienza nella mente del lettore. Un vincolo di necessità collega l’iden-tità di un personaggio al nome, anche dove il riferimento può corrispondere a un vuoto, a un’assenza. Da un lato, sono enti non esistenti, dall’altra il valore del nome, la rigidità del riferimento e i criteri di identificazione non possono non confrontarsi con il pensiero controfattuale, con la simulazione e con il rapporto empatico o im-medesimativo del lettore.
