Entomophagy : European Food Market Regulation and Consumer Protection

The Regulation (EU) 2283/2015 marks a fundamental step in the evolution of food habits in Europe. One of the main and most meaningful sign is the introduction of edible insects into the food category. By a macro-comparative point of view, the A. underlines how entomophagy appears as a cultural change, which does not only concerns consumer choices and the need to balance the right to food safety with that of food security, but also cover the traditional content itself of the word ‘food’ as well as the need to promote the cultural and economic development of European society in harmony with the legal principle of environmental sustainability.

Il Regolamento (UE) n. 2283/2015 segna un passo fondamentale nell’evoluzione delle abitudini alimentari in Europa: l'introduzione degli insetti commestibili nell’ambito del concetto di food costituisce fattore originale dell’evoluzione stessa. L’A. sottolinea, con approccio macro-comparativo, come l'entomofagia rappresenti un cambiamento culturale, che non riguarda quindi le sole scelte dei consumatori e la necessità di bilanciare la food safety con la food security. Essa riguarda anche il contenuto (giuridico) tradizionale del termine food, e non da ultimo la necessità di favorire lo sviluppo culturale ed economico della società europea in linea con il principio della sostenibilità (ambientale).
