Smoking and health

OBJECTIVES Aim of this paper is to report the most recent data related to tobacco smoking habits in Italy. Furthermore, will be discussed the consequences of cigarette smoking on general health and pregnancy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Recent literature was primary evaluated with a search on PubMed and Embase. RESULTS Data of the most recent literature confirm the general health problem related to smoking habits, with emphasis not only on direct and passive smoking but also for the so called third hand smoke (THS). CONCLUSIONS The dental team, dentist and hygienist, should know the consequence of smoking cigarette on general health, besides the related damage of smoke on oral health.

OBIETTIVIGli obiettivi di questo primo modu-lo del dossier sono presentare i dati più recenti disponibili sulla frequenza dell’abitudine al fumo, con particolare riguardo alla situa-zione italiana. Verranno, quindi, descritte le principali conseguenze della dipendenza dal fumo e quel-le del fumo sulla salute generale e sulla gravidanza.MATERIALI E METODIÈ stata analizzata la letteratura più recente, rinvenuta attraverso le principali banche dati (per es., PubMed, Embase).RISULTATII dati della letteratura confermano i danni del fumo diretto, passivo e del cosiddetto third hand smoke (THS).CONCLUSIONIL’odontoiatra e l’igienista dentale devono conoscere le conseguenze del fumo non solo relativamente alla salute orale, ma anche sulla salute generale.
