The long term objective of this paper is to give a first contribution to the assessment of the role of quality in explaining the survival of the specific model of specialisation of the Italian export, the so called “Made in Italy”. To tackle the topic more deeply, we decided to concentrate our analysis on some particular issues of the Italian exports, i.e. four food products where Italy has been continuously a net exporter. The analysis is carried out using not only international trade figures at the most detailed level of detail, but also domestic sources of information and a specific knowledge of the products
