Focusing on the debate between word and image in the 17c. and following its development in the writngs of Dryden, Berkeley, Hogarth, Burke, Gilpin and Reynolds, the essay argues for the sublimity of the image which is going to resurface as a philosophical concept, in poetry and in literature, when 19c. visual culture widens the gap between word and image. Hopkins's poetry and Woolf's conversation on the art of Sickert investigate the borderline where words try to capture visual beauty.
