Our study aims to investigate on the presence E. multilocularis in Italian Alps and to test different diagnostic techniques for the detection of this parasite in the final hosts. We have examined 903 faecal samples of foxes from Trentino Alto Adige and Veneto, through CA-ELISA. The whole sediment of 322 small intestines were analysed by SCT, to detect adult stages of the parasite. We have also collected all the other intestinal helminths found in each sample. 37 faecal samples resulted positive to E. multilocularis on the whole. The parasitological exams have confirmed only 4 cases of infection among animals from province of Bolzano (P=0.4%). Further, the 81.06% of the animals resulted infected by one or more species of intestinal helminths. We confirmed the presence of E. multilocularis in Northern Italy. On the ground of our data, we recommend the integrated use of both techniques (CA-ELISA and SCT) for the diagnosis of echinococcosis in italian foxes.
