Abstract

The state of the art in terms of emerging risks from sustainability policies in the food/feed chain is presented. Regarding this topic, there is a need to monitor routinely the safety of animal products, to design and implement specific monitoring plans conceived to assess the quality and safety of animal products on an epidemiologic basis and to combine new technologies and official control plans to develop and apply new strategies aimed at the prevention of agro-environmental crisis and reduction of consumers’ risk. Within risks associated with food/feed safety, the occurrence of mycotoxin contamination in feedstuffs have a relevant health and economic impact. Mycotoxin sampling and analysis represent an important issue. Official methods are available with performance properties meeting the general and specific requirements reported in EU Regulations, but there is a need to develop fast, non-destructive, and actually applicable methods in a screening control procedure for the evaluation of undesirable substances content in food/feed must considering the maximum levels or guidance values established by the European Union.
