The non-linear behaviour of a series array of two membranes has been first investigated by Kedem and Katchalsky and by Patlak, Goldstein and Hoffman. This study has been subsequently resumed by several different Authors and an extension to a series array of n membranes has been attempted by Ludwikòw, strictly following the approach by Kedem and Katchalsky. Our generalization follows the suggestion by Patlak, Goldstein and Hoffman, using the Kedem-Katchalsky linear “practical” equations for volumetric (Jv) and solute (Js) flows in conditions where their intrinsic limitations vanish.

Abstract
The non-linear behaviour of a series array of two membranes has been first investigated by Kedem and Katchalsky and by Patlak, Goldstein and Hoffman. This study has been subsequently resumed by several different Authors and an extension to a series array of n membranes has been attempted by Ludwikòw, strictly following the approach by Kedem and Katchalsky. Our generalization follows the suggestion by Patlak, Goldstein and Hoffman, using the Kedem-Katchalsky linear “practical” equations for volumetric (Jv) and solute (Js) flows in conditions where their intrinsic limitations vanish.Pubblicazioni consigliate
