Urticaria and Mercury Dental Amalgam

Here we describe a woman in whom chronic urticaria developed as an early sign of dental amalgam adverse events to mercury dental amalgam fillings. A 26-year-old woman reported that she had systemic urticaria with pruritic papules and plaques, and burning sensation. Signs were also facial and periobital edema. Since 6 months before, each episode started with a skin contact with metal buttons and/or rivets on her jeans as well as after swimming training courses. She was a swimming teacher. She had 8 mercury-containing dental amalgam fillings. She has a history of migraine during menstrual periods and acne rosacea. We patch tested her with dental allergens series and she displayed a strong allergy to nickel sulfate 5%. We recommended her to remove completely mercury dental amalgam restorations, which was performed by us without complications. 4 months after total amalgam removal, the chronic urticaria resolved and no other episodes recurred after 9 years. Also, we observed an unexpected improving about migraine during perimenstrual period.
