Tourism represents a growing economical sector, which can generate relevant impacts on environments, societies and economies around the world. The application of sustainability principles thus represents the only way to avoid that tourism compromises both places and cultures. More specifically, it is useful to analyze which role protected areas play in the promotion of sustainable tourism initiatives. The study-case of the Ticino Valley Park, located in Lombardy region, can be considered as an interesting example through which a local development strategy based on sustainable tourism can be assessed.

Abstract

Tourism represents a growing economical sector, which can generate relevant impacts on environments, societies and economies around the world. The application of sustainability principles thus represents the only way to avoid that tourism compromises both places and cultures. More specifically, it is useful to analyze which role protected areas play in the promotion of sustainable tourism initiatives. The study-case of the Ticino Valley Park, located in Lombardy region, can be considered as an interesting example through which a local development strategy based on sustainable tourism can be assessed.
