The article analizes the specific use of an ancient source - De origine et situ Germanorum by P.C. Tacitus - in the historical works written by the Russian writer N.V. Gogol'(notably in his historical essays and in the historical novel Taras Bulba). The article also presents a survey of the role played by the works of Tacitus in the Russian Culture of the first half of Nineteenth Century.
