The essay traces Burckhardt's presence in England: from his first visits, it then examines his comments on London museums and collections, the translations of his work, and finally his influence on intellectuals fascinated by the Renaissance, and on art historians who would adopt his views and follow his lesson. Here the response to 'Culture of the Italian Renaissance' takes two distinct directions: on the one hand formalism and Roger Fry's concept of significant form are fostered by Burckhardt analysis; on the other hand, social histories of art, and eventually cultural history, recognize their debt to his work.

Abstract

The essay traces Burckhardt's presence in England: from his first visits, it then examines his comments on London museums and collections, the translations of his work, and finally his influence on intellectuals fascinated by the Renaissance, and on art historians who would adopt his views and follow his lesson. Here the response to 'Culture of the Italian Renaissance' takes two distinct directions: on the one hand formalism and Roger Fry's concept of significant form are fostered by Burckhardt analysis; on the other hand, social histories of art, and eventually cultural history, recognize their debt to his work.
