Monnaies, marchands et mathématique. Les listes des monnaies dans les traités de mathématique et les traités de marchandise du Moyen Âge italien

This article offers more consideration on the theme of coin-lists contained in most Italian abacus books and merchant’s books of the 13th to 15th centuries, and it updates the monograph published by the same author in 2003 (Monete, mercanti e matematica), confirming some of its hypothesis on the basis of more recent bibliography. Notably, it has been confirmed that my new dating of the coin-list and other coins in the abacus manuscript at Columbia University can be used to re-date the entire text, making it apparently the oldest known text of this type in Italian ‘volgare’ (J. Høyrup in Revue d’histoire des mathématique 2005). The article also addresses some problems of interpretation and use of such lists, questioning their reliability.
