This study not only analyses the historical context in which the Audio-lingual Method developed but also its linguistic and psycholinguistic background. Based on extensive memorization, repetition and over-learning of patterns, it was widely used in the 1950s and 1960s. What is language, how we acquire it, how it is taught according to this method are some of the questions this work tries to answer. Various examples of teaching materials are taken into consideration.
