From 1954 to 1958, Fanfani's idea was of a Europe that was needed to resolve problems relating to energy and transport, as well as to increase the importance and the power of Italy in relation to the other countries of the continent. As a result he mobilized the spread of Christian Democracy to spread the idea of Europe amongst the population of Italy. From 1960 to 1968 he sought to introduce Great Britain into the Community to replace the Berlin-Paris axis with the Rome-London axis, but maintainingstrong links to Washington. Fanfani was convinced that European integration and Atlantic solidarity were the two main points of Italian foreign policy.
