This paper follows the career at court of the ʿAbbāsid scholar Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī (d. 335/947) as it is described in his chronicles of the caliphs whom he served as table companion, with particular reference to the way in which he was paid. A sophisticated system of salaries, pension and rewards emerges, as well as the problems such systems generated in the long run.
